Transfer Case: The Basis for Your 4WD Experience

If you drive a car equipped with four wheel drive (4WD), then you have a transfer case as part of your transmission system. You already know that you can drive your 4WD vehicle in either 4WD mode or a two wheel drive mode. In order to save fuel, most 4WD-equipped vehicles are driven in 2WD until the driver needs more traction. At that point, the vehicle can be switched into 4WD.

When this happens, the transfer case is engaged and power is sent up and down the drive lines to the front and rear differentials. It is then distributed to all four of your car's wheels, giving you more capability.
