FAQs
Understanding Your Ford Protection Plans
- What is a Ford Protect Extended Service Plan (ESP)? It is Ford's official factory-backed coverage that pays for parts and labor on thousands of components after your standard factory warranty expires. It is honored at any Ford dealership across the U.S. and Canada.
- What is the difference between PremiumCare and PowertrainCare? PremiumCare is Ford's highest tier, covering over 1,000+ components (including high-tech touchscreens, sensors, and electrical systems). PowertrainCare covers only the core mechanical components like the engine, transmission, and drivetrain.
- What does Ford GAP Protection cover? If your vehicle is declared a total loss due to an accident or theft, GAP covers the financial difference between your auto insurance payout (market value) and what you still owe on your Ford Credit contract.
- What is Ford Protect Tire & Wheel Protection? Covers the cost to repair or replace tires and wheels structurally damaged by unexpected road hazards like potholes, glass, nails, or debris.
Refunds, Transfers, & Monthly Payments
- Will cancelling my Ford Protect plan lower my monthly payment? No. Your monthly payment is legally determined by your original finance contract. Any pro-rated refund will be issued directly to your lender and applied to your principal balance, helping you pay off your loan sooner.
- Can I transfer my Ford Protect plan instead of canceling it? Yes! If you are selling your vehicle privately, you can transfer the remaining coverage to the new buyer for a small fee, which significantly increases your vehicle’s resale value.
- Is the cancellation refund 100%? No. Product refunds are calculated on a pro-rated basis depending on the elapsed time or mileage used since the purchase date, minus a standard administrative fee.
Mechanical Failures & Dealer Obligations
- If I cancel, isn’t the dealer required to cover mechanical repairs? No. Once the manufacturer's factory warranty expires (3-Year/36,000-Mile Bumper-to-Bumper), vehicles are legally sold "As-Is" unless an active Ford Protect Service Contract is in place. Without it, all breakdown costs are entirely the owner's responsibility.
- Does Ford Roadside Assistance pay for my mechanical repairs? No. Official Ford Roadside Assistance (800-241-3673) will tow you to the nearest Ford dealer, flat-bed your vehicle, or jump your battery, but they do not cover diagnostics, parts, or repair labor.
- Does standard auto insurance cover mechanical breakdowns? No. Automotive insurance only covers vehicle damage resulting from accidents, theft, vandalism, or weather. It explicitly excludes internal mechanical failures or electrical breakdowns.
Before You Cancel: What You Need to Know
- Talk to a Ford Manager First: We strongly recommend contacting a manager at your purchase location before canceling. Removing coverage leaves you vulnerable to high out-of-pocket repair costs on complex EcoBoost engines and Ford electronic systems.
- Required Documentation: To process your refund, you must provide proof of current mileage. Please provide one of the following based on your situation:
- Active Ownership: A clear photo of your odometer.
- Traded-In: A copy of the Odometer Statement or Purchase Agreement from the new dealer.
- Total Loss: A copy of the insurance settlement documents.
- Important Details: Please allow up to six (6) weeks for processing. Providing inaccurate mileage is considered fraudulent and will void the request.
Still Have Questions?
