It is a more badass version of the Expedition, with goodies such as a new offroad suspension, chunkier tires, and a unique look; inside and out. The Expedition Timberline is lighter and is more high tech than its rivals as well.

Engine and Numbers

The engine available on the Timberline Expedition is a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. It is more powerful than the standard version with 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. This makes it almost as powerful as the F150 Raptor. The transmission is a 10-speed automatic that sends all of that power to all four wheels.

The Timberline’s towing capacity figures aren’t out yet. But you should expect it to haul around 9000 pounds, which is more than enough for an off-roader. It is also very quick due to the increased power of the engine; the Timberline is able to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 5 seconds.

Interior and Technology

The interior of the Expedition Timberline includes a massive cabin with lots of headroom and legroom. The interior color is known as Deep Cyprus; complimented by red-colored stitching and accents, unique for the Timberline. You can choose between cloth and leather seats.

There are three rows of seats that can seat up to eight people with absolute comfort. You are offered 40/20/40 power folding in the middle and 60/40 power folding in the third row. The front seats are quite versatile with 10- and 8-way powered seats for the driver and passenger respectively.

Getting deeper into the tech, you can choose between the standard 12-inch or the massive optional 15.5-inch infotainment system. To get the best sound, there’s also a top-class Bang & Olufsen stereo available with 12 speakers. Wireless charging is standard and so are the 4 USB ports for multimedia.

Other standard stuff includes AM/FM radio, connected navigation, remote start, push-button ignition, and cruise control. The steering wheel is heated, and you can get the optional heated and ventilated seats as well. You can also add ambient lighting to the cabin to truly enjoy the mood.

There’s a lot of standard safety tech, which includes a rearview and 360-degree camera. The latter also comes with guidance for when you reverse with your trailer. You get Forward Sensing, plus Pre-Collision Assist with AEB. The Lane-Keeping system includes several driver-assistance features as well.

There are optional safety upgrades such as cross-traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control (with stop-and-go), and multiple systems to help with hauling a trailer. There is also a package available (Active Park Assist 2.0) that makes parking a lot easier.

Exterior and Driving

The 2022 Expedition Timberline is quite a looker. There’s a darker front grille and red accents on the body. The color choices are Agate Black Metallic, Oxford White, Infinite Blue Metallic, Dark Matter Metallic, Forged Green Metallic, Star White Metallic, and Stone Blue Metallic (the coats vary).

It has huge 33-inch-tall Goodyear A/T tires with 18-inch black aluminum rims, and an excellent ground clearance. You get a skid plate and you can add more underbody protection as well. There’s also a choice of three outfitters – a skybox, a roof rack, and a bike-rack.

So, how does the Expedition Timberline drive? As mentioned above, it is quite quick as far as acceleration is concerned. It is also more agile than the standard expedition due to its lighter weight. The suspension and steering are tuned for offroading.

There are several cool offroad-assistance systems available on the Timberline. The most basic one might be the two-speed transfer case with multiple settings for the range. The Trail Control system helps keep the vehicle’s rear from sliding out when you hit the brakes on the trail.

The 2022 Ford Expedition gets a rating of 78 out of 100 from JD Power. They’ve given it a score of 75 as far as reliability is concerned, which puts it at average. Consumer Reports has given high praise to the Expedition. Hence, you can expect the Timberline to be a reliable vehicle as well.

The limited warranty on the Expedition Timberline covers 3 years or 36k miles, whichever comes first. The powertrain is covered for 5 years or 60k miles.

There are many safety systems on it as well.

The warranty coverage is great and the reliability is decent as well. This is definitely a vehicle that you’d want to take your family or friends out in the trail on.
