2023 Ford Expedition Review

The Expedition has been Ford’s answer to the full-size SUV category for a quarter of a century now. Ever since its inception, it has been one of the best-selling large SUVs in the US. The Expedition’s power, luxury, and capabilities have a lot to do with this.
The following is a review of the 2023 Ford Expedition and the longer Expedition Max, and a look at their highlights:
Features
The Expedition is currently in its 4th generation, and it can seat up to 8 occupants. It features 6 trim levels, with one of them being the offroad-oriented Timberline. It comes with one engine, with various tuned options available as you move up the trims. This year’s model mainly sees some changes in the colors available.
Powertrain and Numbers
The Expedition 2023 comes with a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine which churns out at least 380 hp and 470 lb-ft. If you upgrade to the Expedition Limited trim, it becomes good for 400 hp and 480 lb-ft. The same engine is tuned to give out 440 hp and 510 lb-ft on the top trims.
All of these enormous power outputs are sent via a 10-speed automatic gearbox to a rear- or all-wheel drive system. The result is that the Expedition 2023 is able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in as low as 4.9 seconds. It is hence one of the quickest SUVs on the planet.
As always, the Expedition doesn’t disappoint when you want to tow. The Expedition and the Expedition Max have maximum towing capacities of 9300 and 9000 lbs respectively. The top hauling capacity is 1750 lbs. Once again, it rules the class in both of these departments.
And with all the power and capabilities above, you are also expected to get a stellar fuel economy. According to the EPA, the 2022 Ford Expedition was rated at mpg in the city and 23 on the highway. This one should do similar numbers.
Interior and Technology
The 2023 Ford Expedition’s interior features a large cabin with an attractive block-like design. The interior is full of high-quality materials and everything is put together nicely. As this is a full-sized SUV, spaciousness should be the least of your problems.
Cargo space is also the best among its rivals and the Expedition Max is even better for it. You can add to the trunk’s vast area by folding down the second and third rows of seats. The cubby storage has also been praised by the vehicles’ testers.

The following shows the 2023 Expedition’s trims and their standard features:
2023 Expedition XL
The entry-level Expedition XL is offered with the STX package. You get niceties such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, push-button ignition, tri-zone climate control, cruise control, and 8-way power-adjustability for the driver’s seat.
For the infotainment, you’ll be spoiled with a massive 12-inch touchscreen that connects to a 6-speaker stereo. Android and Apple capabilities are also included, and so are several powerpoints.
Safety-wise, you get many driver’s assistance features. Forward-collision warning (w/automated emergency braking), blind-spot monitoring (w/rear cross-traffic alerts), rear parking sensors, a backup camera, and a lane-keeping system are all standard.
2023 Expedition XLT
You get 8 seats starting from the 2023 Expedition XLT trim level. Along with that, you get upgrades such as an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a powered tailgate. Also, the third-row seats are power-folding. This trim unlocks countless options as well.
2023 Expedition Limited
Next up is the 2023 Expedition Limited trim which gains a lot of sophistication. For example, the seats get even better with leather trimmings, plus heating and ventilation. The front passenger gets 8-way powered adjustability and the second row receives captain’s chairs.
A heated steering wheel is now included. The entertainment is also enhanced thanks to the 12-speaker stereo by B&O. Finally, the safety department gets front parking sensors and adaptive cruise control.
2023 Expedition Timberline
The Expedition Timberline has been considered a gem ever since its launch. While its best upgrades are on the outside, the interior also gets more upscale. The Timberline has ActiveX-trimmed seats with tangerine stitching and the trim’s logo.
You also get keyless entry, 10-way powered seating for the driver, a wireless charging pad for your phone, and active noise control.
2023 Expedition King Ranch
The mighty Expedition King Ranch ups the atmosphere with its custom upholstery and logos. Better amenities are also added such as a 15.5-inch touchscreen, a 22-speaker stereo, remote start, and a 360-degree camera with trailer-reverse guidance.
2023 Expedition Platinum
The top-of-the-line Expedition Platinum gets you all of the above, plus massaging seats, more parking assists, and custom accents among other things.
Exterior and Driving
The Ford Expedition and Expedition Max 2023 are graceful to look at and have a commanding appearance. The various trim levels differ in terms of their front grilles, wheels, mirrors, etc.
The Expedition Timberline is most unique though with its black wheels and dark grille. It offers thicker tires, more ground clearance, a heavy-duty radiator, incandescent LEDs for better visibility, and more equipment to help you go offroad.

- Agate Black Metallic
- Forged Green Metallic
- Iconic Silver Metallic
- Jewel Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat
- Oxford White
- Race Red
Do make sure that the color of your choice is available on your trim though.
Both the Expedition and Expedition Max are superbly athletic vehicles. They are easy to drive despite their sizes and their cabins offer a serene environment. While all of them do well off-tarmac, the Expedition Timberline is on a whole different level. As a bonus for this year, Ford has made the Trail 1 Pedal Drive feature standard on it.

Reliability and Warranty
The Expedition 2023 models haven’t received a reliability rating from JD Power yet. But since all of the hardware is similar to the 2022 model, they’ll do just fine with an expected rating of 75 out of 100. It should be noted that the current buyers are happy with the dependability.
Furthermore, you get the industry standard warranties offered by Ford. There’s a limited warranty that’s good for 3 years/36k miles and a powertrain warranty that covers you for 5 years/60k miles.
Verdict
The Expedition/Expedition Max 2023 are both masterpieces if you’re looking for a large SUV. They’re at the top of the class in areas such as cargo space, towing capacity, and horsepower. On top of all this, you also get a stellar fuel economy.
The driving capabilities are excellent on- and off-tarmac. On the inside, you get a well-built and comfy cabin on all the trims, getting more upscale as you move up the hierarchy. Overall, the Expedition 2023 is just a flawless SUV on all levels.
